I ride a city bike, and I wear whatever shoes I happen to have on - flip flops, sneakers, heels. These pedals provide great control and a real feeling of power when pedaling with all kinds of footwear. I used to ride a very expensive road bike with clipless pedals, so I was used to the feeling of having "grip" in my pedal stroke. The pedals that came with my bike were just the cheap, slippery ones that dig into your shoes. The Ergon pedals are really well designed, with a well countured footbed that guides your foot to proper placement. You really do feel like you are getting closer to the feeling of the "circular" pedaling motion, rather than just pushing down on a pedal.

I switched to these pedals from pedals with straps, when I started to use my bike daily to commute to work in Mass. Between the cars and the weather, I did not want to risk having my feet strapped to pedals if I needed to take evasive action. I assumed my pedaling would become less efficient, but the opposite has occurred. I can keep a faster ongoing tempo with these pedals that I did with toe clips. Strange but true. Add to this that I can wear any shoes I want, and I am quite pleased. The only negative is that you need an 8 mm Allen wrench to install them, and the instructions were a bit vague. I spent a lot of time futily trying to put the left pedal on the right side of the bike. Now all is well.

Like most PC2 buyers, I bought these for commuting in regular shoes. For the most part, they are very good for this. However, they are terrible with leather soled shoes. The pedals have 3M safety tape as their grip tape. Leather soles not only slip around like crazy on this stuff, but they are shredded through at the same time. Even if they gripped, factoring in the cost of resoling would, by my estimate, make these pedals cost around $600 per year. That said, I do want them to work. I am going to try peeling off the 'safety tape' and gluing on some Shoe Goo to rectify this. I have used rubber block pedals before these, and the rubber gripped very well.
That problem aside, these are great pedals. On rubber and sythetic soled shoes these grip very nicely. The huge size of the pedal means that even when you do slip, you probably won't slip right off. The curvature appears to help the grip, though I am not sure about it putting you in the correct positioning as their advertising material would have you believe.
Had these pedals been fit for commuting in dress shoes, I would have given them five stars.

As described in the comments, I attached rubber grips to these. This worked perfectly.
